Match Reports

After letting victory slip through the fingers at Wembley, Kenton looked to start the second half of the season in a positive manner against an Uxbridge side who could be fighting the promotion battle. Captain Sachin Patel and wicketkeeper Mark Sweeney were away. Jonathan Mills was back this week, and Sami Haider returned for the second half of the season, suggesting a boost to Kenton’s survival hopes. Kaushal Patel stepped in as wicketkeeper!

Kenton won the toss and elected to bowl on a flat wicket, previously played on by Middlesex in the week. Uxbridge got off to a slow start, with only 29 from the first 14 overs, losing 2 wickets, one each for Kumar and Aman. This new Kenton opening bowling partnership has restricted teams well, and the pressure was soon released after Aman had finished his spell and Mohsin Zubair came on to bowl. Uxbridge doubled their score in the space of 5 overs, with Zubair bowling 3 overs for 23. K.Patel was doing a job behind the wicket, letting no byes through for the first 20, and taking a stumping off the bowling of The Pro, leaving Uxbridge 3 down for 66 at drinks. Sami came on a few before drinks to test the waters, and although starting a little rusty, only went for 1 run in his first 2 overs. Uxbridge’s no.3 bat looked in fine form, playing his way to a fine 100, a stumping missed while he was in his 90’s with batsmen contributing from the other end. Finally a chance came K.Patels way, with Sami bowling a peach to the settled batsman, caught, stumped, the lot! David Sweeney came on at the death, and despite being smashed in the ankle after some good football, played a key role in restricting the opposition with a mix of seam and spin. With wickets falling at regular intervals, Uxbridge managed a modest 213 for 8. Not a bad job from Kenton in the field, or from K.Patel behind the stumps, only 4 byes!

Kenton looked positive when chasing, starting off with a flury of shots from Mills and Jooma, the ball being dispatched to the boundary regularly. After Mills was given LBW off a full toss, Jooma and Ashraf continued to keep the rate at 5’s, but a questionable LBW decision from the umpire saw Jooma (48) throw his toys out of the pram, eventually resulting in an ‘imaginary yellow card’. Ashraf looked in brilliant form on his way to a fine 53, and even hitting a maximum! Kumar got going with some big shots, including a maximum over extra cover. But when The Pro got himself out, Kenton started to lose wickets regularly. Rishi Kotecha provided an action replay of Kumars dismissal, followed by a brilliant catch to dismiss K.Patel and some smart bowling to get rid of stand in captain D.Singh. Kenton, who were cruising towards 10 points, were now looking to save the game, 7 down from 40 overs. After initially passing the 4pt draw mark of 175, Zubair and Sweeney comfortably negotiated for the rest of the game, earning Kenton a 4pt draw. Sensible cricket from the not out batsmen to secure points for a struggling Kenton side.

The second half of the season got off to an ‘OK’ start, but with previously bottom Bessborough beating top of the league Wembley, Kenton move to bottom of the table. A win against Indian Gymkhana next week would see Kenton go above them, and maybe up a few more positions depending on league results.

Kenton played top of the league Wembley in a game that could have kick started their season before the second half began. With the league tight for points, this game was make or break for the Kenton boys who needed some points under their belt.

But after bowling Wembley out for 138, Kenton collapsed through a combination of poor LBW decisions and getting cleaned up. Kenton bowled out for 111.
Second half of the season begins next Saturday at Uxbridge, with skipper Sachin away.

After a poor run of form Kenton looked to continue their season against a North London side which was unfamiliar to them. Overnight rain had severely affected the wicket, and play eventually began at 2.45pm. The game was reduced to 80 overs.

After losing the toss, Kenton were put in. Whilst all the umpires, opposition and opener Schopun Jooma were ready to play, Kumar ‘The Pro’ helped to delay the start further. The Pro came out late, and was back in the hutch after just the first delivery of the game caught behind, his bad form continuing. Some runs were put on the board before pushed at one on a slow popping deck and was caught by short mid off. Kenton 2 down with 24 on the board, with Faisal Ashraf at the crease. Deepak Singh entered at no. 4 looking to get himself into form after a poor run, but he soon departed, as did Mark Sweeney, leaving Kenton in a difficult position at 33-4 from 12 overs. With a potential 32 overs still to bat, it looked unlikely that Kenton would post a suitable total. With Ashraf free flowing at the crease, K.Patel joined him to steady the innings. Ashraf continued in fine form, hitting boundary after boundary on his way to a difficult 37 before eventually being caught and bowled by Scantlebury (NL). Following Ashrafs dismissal, David Sweeney soon fell to the same bowler, prompting the arrival of the injured captain Sachin Patel. As S.Patel looked to push on, it became clear that it would be impossible to bat on this wicket for anybody. S.Patel was caught at mid off, off the bowling of Wakeford, whobowled 6 maidens from his 7 overs. With the score now 59-7, Mohsin Zubair and Jameel Shah fell quickly, leaving K.Patel with debutant no.11 Aman Sheraani to salvage the innings. After batting for over an hour and a half, K.Patel was the last wicket to fall, leaving Kenton with a total of 74 from 35.3 overs. North London required 75 runs to win with plenty of overs to bat.

With Shah and Sheraani opening the bowling, Kenton soon left the opposition 2-2 in 2 overs. Sheraani took 2 wickets in his first over for the 1st XI, and was on a hat-trick. However, North London managed to push the total forward with no.1 and no.4 batting steadily at the crease, and from 17 overs they were 40-2. Controversy flaired as appeals for catches off the glove (more than once) were turned down by the umpires. However, Zubair came on in the 18th and took a wicket with his first over. At 42-3, the game was still in North London’s favour. The Pro then came on in an attempt to influence the game, however it was clear that spin would not do the trick on this deck. With the pace bowlers continuing, David Sweeney came on and took the wiket of no.5 who had accumulated some runs in a wicket maiden. Zubair had the luck on his side after dismissing no.4 LBW, and in his subsequent over took 2 more wickets and was on a hat-trick. The score now 64-7, wickets had tumbled quickly. Further controversy came as the game came to its conclusion when appeal after appeal for LBW was turned down, but Kenton continued to fight after getting a sniff in. Sheraani came back on and immediately took the wicket of the new batsman, and Shah came back on to claim the wicket of another new batsman, which left North London at 70-9. With 5 runs left to win and just one wicket to take, Zubair came very close to taking it with 73 on the board. An LBW appeal was turned down in this penultimate over, causing outrage on the pitch. The next ball was squeezed for 2 runs, and North London got the 10pts.

Ashrafs and Zubairs key performance with the bat and ball respectively earned Kenton the chance to fight in this match. However, the reality is that Kenton have not won a game in the last 3, and have slipped second bottom of the table. Kenton face top of the league Wembley next week.

With the skipper unavailable this season, stand in Captain Deepak Singh lost the toss and Ickenham put Kenton in. Singh failing to win the toss for the best part of 2 seasons now! Kenton started off aggressively, scoring 37 from 5 overs, with stand in opener Trushaal Gaikwad showing his potential to score quickly. Gaikwad soon played a shot too many, losing his wicket in the 6th over after smashing another boundary. Jonathan Mills continued scoring steadily, and with Kaushal Patel at the crease, the run rate decreased to 5 an over. Patel soon was bowled after a bowling change from the opposition skipper, and subsequently the famous Kenton batting collapse began. The rapid loss of Mark Sweeney, Mills (51), Kumar, and Rishi Kotecha left Kenton at 107-6 after 24 overs, with Dean Waller of Ickenham bowling an excellent spell of outswing. Skipper Deepak Singh led the fight-back with support from David Sweeney, both scoring steadily to recover the innings. However luck was not with Kenton when Singh smashed a loose ball back at the bowler, the bowler got a touch and the non-striker was run out as a result. Next batsman in was Kalpesh Kerai, and with a maximum of 21 overs still available to bat, the chance for lower order batsmen to shine was present. Singh then put the ball straight up in the air and lost his own wicket after scoring a resilient 28, with Kerai chipping the ball to mid off in the same over. With Kenton 9 wickets down, Jameel Shah hit a few boundaries to boost the score, but was eventually bowled.

Kenton were all out, only managing to score 158 from 38.5 overs.

It was not to be Kenton’s day today. Ickenham started by hitting four consecutive 4’s from the first over, with new ball bowler Charles Erdwin uncharacteristically bowling poor areas for his opening 2-over spell. Sweeney continued his rare medium pace, this time opening the bowling. Jameel Shah also bowled a short spell, not managing to reach the pace at which he was dangerous at in the 2nd XI and in the 1st XI last season. But with the opposition hitting boundaries in every over bowled, Kumar – the pro – was introduced into the attack, as was Kerai. After settling in, both spinners slowed the run rate, however both batsmen were happy to score slow and steady. Eventually, both Ickenham openers reached half-centuries, before Kerai produced a peach of a delivery to remove a settled batsman. With no action and steady run scoring, Ickenham closed in on the total. Captain Singh called upon K.Patel to bowl his first league over for 2 seasons, and after a few good deliveries to beat the bat, K.Patel was off the mark with the ball. The change was a little too late, with the game being won in the next over. Ickenham chased Kenton’s total in 35 overs, and won by 9 wickets.

Notable performances include another excellent innings by Jonathan Mills (51) continuing in good form. However, this was overshadowed by performances from Ickenhams Dean Waller (4-28 from 10), and openers R.Berti and R.Crompton, scoring 51 and 79* respectively.

Kenton slip to mid-table and will make changes with the hope of a better result next week – vs Harrow St. Mary’s.

On a sunny day, Kenton won the toss and elected to bowl first. The new opening combination of Charles Erdwin and Kumar Sadagopan (the pro) got off to a bright start as they have done so far this season. After a few hit and miss boundaries and a few swings from the hip, Erdwin picked up the first wicket and bowled a tidy 1st spell.

Kumar continued to put on the pressure at the top end of the ground whilst a sharp piece of fielding by Kaushal Patel had the opposition no.4 run out, the same dangerous batsman who hit the ball to all parts in this very fixture last season. Continuing from the bottom end was Mohsin Zubair, who further reduced the opposition to 85-4 after bowling a wicket maiden in his 6th over.

Some good batting lead to a good middle order partnership, with South Hampstead (SH) skipper Paul Atherley batting steadily throughout the match. The arrival of David Sweeney lead to another wicket maiden, and from 133-5 wickets fell at regular intervals, eventually leading the score to 194-8 from 44 overs. With Atherley continuing in good form, SH’s no.10 batsman Majid Akram joined him at the crease. SH batted a further 9 overs, from which the run rate rapidly increased, seeing Atherley score 126no, and Kenton conceding 82 runs from 9 overs. SH declared at 276-8 from 53 overs after Kenton fell flat in the field.

Kenton required 277 to win, and 245 to get the winning draw following the break. Jonathan Mills despatched the first ball of the innings to the boundary stating Kenton’s intentions to score quickly. After chasing a wider delivery, Schopun Jooma was caught behind and soon followed by K.Patel caught in the slips. Captain Sachin Patel attempted to support Jonathan Mills’ solid innings of 39, but was soon bowled. After avoiding the awkward bounce of a length ball which managed to rise over Mills’ head, Mills soon departed, leaving Kenton at 86-4 in the 18th over.

At this stage, Kenton are still ahead compared to the same stage in the previous innings. Kumar and Sweeney were going steady at the crease until Kumar was given caught behind for 25, a game changing decision which may or may not have been correct. Sweeney and Singh continued at an equal rate on course for the 4pt Draw, but 2 quick wickets from J.Medlin lead to a score of 147-7 from 31 overs.

Erdwin soon departed but no.8 batsman Rishi Kotecha batted superbly under the conditions with Sweeney, who lost his wicket with a few overs to go. With Kenton 9 down, Zubair attempted to salvage the 1pt Draw. Drama in the final over as Zubair edged to 3rd slip at a catchable height, only to be dropped. With only one ball to negotiate, Zubair managed to handle the situation, leaving Kenton at 176-9 from 47 overs – a 1pt Draw. Kenton stay above SH in the league tables.

J.Medlin bowled excellent areas to reach figures of 4-53 from 16 overs.

On a rain affected Kenton pitch and a cloudy day, Sachin Patel won the toss and sought to take advantage of the conditions by bowling first. The new bowling partnership got off to a steady start, with Charles Erdwin bowling well to tickle the edge of W.Whitsons bat (or so it seemed), only for the umpire to rule not out. After a tidy first 10, it took a bowling change to get the first breakthrough, with Deepak Singh forcing false shots to dismiss both openers. Kumar (the pro) dismissed no.3 with the perfect off break delivery, spinning sharply throught the gate and taking leg stump from outside off. And soon after, Bessborough were 83-4 after no.5 offered no shot to the spinning ball, given LBW, another good delivery from the pro. A valuble 6 overs by Singh was followed by a surprise spell of seam up pace bowling from David Sweeney. Kumar continued from the top end in an attempt to stop the flow of runs, but eventually started leaking a few when the arrival of Barrie and Chavda steadied the Bessborough ship. The partnership of 50 ended when Barrie struck the ball back at Kumar, who deflected it onto the stumps at the non-strikers end, with Chavda watching on from outside his crease. Barrie soon slipped up after attempting to increase the run rate, pulling the ball high into the air, caught and bowled by Erdwin for 83 - a fine innings. Kentons bowling attack seemed to regularly concede boundaries, however Bessborough negatively only managed to score at less than 4 runs per over off 55, a total of 213.

Kenton required 214 to win, and 175 for the winning draw.

With the rain ready to come down, Kenton began in typical fassion, losing early wickets and getting into trouble. Schopun Jooma was dropped a few times before providing an opportunity too easy to put down, out for 15. Trushaal Gaikwad slotted in at 3 this week, but after getting off the mark, got frustrated by some tight bowling and ran down the track past a straight ball. Captain Sachin Patel looked comfortable and settled before Barrie moved the ball back and cramped him for room. The ball came off his body and bowled him for 10, an unlucky dismissal. The rain break earlier had reduced the game by 2 overs - the revised total for the winning draw was 167. Kenton looked to The Pro to steady the innings, but a brilliant catch by Barrie off his own bowling meant that Kumar was out first ball chipping it back. The score now, 49-4. In came Mark Sweeney who has been in good form this year. After some lovely shots, Sweeney and Mills put on a partnership of 79, with plenty of boundaries, incuding a big hit from Mills into the courts (a rare site to see). With over 80 needed from 10 overs and Mills (69) caught on the boundary, and Sweeney (59) followed in similar fassion after Singh got bowled around his legs paddlesweeping a legspinner. Requiring 60 off 8 overs seemed like a difficult task, but with Kotecha at the crease and the captain instructing nothing less than 10 points, Kotecha hit boundary after boundary, forcing bad bowling and putting poor bowling away. A much needed 42* from 20 balls saw Kenton home in 41.4 overs. Kenton keep Bessborough rooted to the bottom of the table.

A crucial innings of 83 by Ian Barrie helped Bessborough to post a total, however significant contributions from Jonathan Mills (69), Mark Sweeney (59) and Rishi Kotecha (42*) earned 10 points for Kenton.

With a more balanced team this week of Youngsters and Seniors, Raj won the toss and put Southgate into bat.

Tight bowling from Sareen Patel and New Boy Hiten Varsani the start breaking through to restrict Southgate batsman.

The ever tight bowling from Dev Venkat with a spell of 20-4-40-4 reduced Southgate down to 6 down. A bit of resistance for the 7th wicket saw Southgate reach 181/7 in 50 overs. It was down to the Kenton boys to chase down 181 in 42 overs.

That we did with a great start from Vimalraj and Baskey. No not that Baskey, but his friend with the same name!!!

They put on 65 for the first wicket in 12 overs. With the same momentum Vimalraj and the Skipper continued the run chase.

Vimalraj dispatched the Southgate attack to all parts. Scoring a fine 52 Vimaraj departed, soon after so did the skipper. It was down to the middle order a fine 33 not out by Dev Venkat and 18 not out from Junior Giffin (Joseph) took us home with 2.3 overs to spare.

10 LEAGUE POINTS!!!!   Well done guys great team performance.
