10 Questions with Ashish Karia

10 Questions with Ashish Karia

Viraj Patel3 Mar 2022 - 18:30

This week, we interviewed former 1XI captain, Ashish Karia, as we talk about some of his best memories at the club and his all time Kenton XI...

Earlier this week, we interviewed former Kenyan International Ashish Karia, here's the interview in full.

1. How long have you been at Kenton CC?
I joined Kenton in 2007 after a move over from Kenya, and I’ve been fortunate enough to play in the 1XI for most of my time at the club. I had no choice to play for Kenton as Anand made that decision for me and I can only be thankful with no such regrets.

2. How did you first get into cricket?
I’ve been playing cricket since the age of 10, and cricket has always been a big part of my life. It’s amazing how cricket finds you in Kenya! I made sure I took every opportunity to play, whether it be a game on a Saturday or a practice session, I would be there! It all started when I used to play cricket with my dad in our front yard. My cousin would watch from time to time, and he pushed for me to play for a local team which is where I really fell in love with the game. I made a decision to leave school in 2002, a year in which I went to represent Kenya at the U19 World Cup in New Zealand, which then led on to a few games for the Kenya National Side.

3. What are your best on-field cricket memories at Kenton?
One of my fondest memories playing for the club had to be way back in 2013. It was the year I scored back-to-back hundreds in the MCCL against two tough opponents, Edmonton CC (139) & Indian Gymkhana CC (101*). There’s been loads of memorable moments over the years, and I look forward to creating some more this season.

4. What’s your best off-field memory at Kenton?
Seeing my boy play at the club, it can’t be anything else. Yes, it wasn’t an appearance in the 1XI but to see him hit a few balls was very special for me and something I will always treasure. This being said, I have a funny feeling he’s going to be a footballer and not a cricketer!

5. Who’s your favourite drinking partner in the bar?
Anand. Only because he doesn’t let me pay!

6. Which players would you recommend avoiding in the nets?
Sohail, he swings it both ways! Well, that’s what he says anyway.

7. Who’s the toughest opposition you’ve played against?
The toughest opposition I’ve played against in my time at Kenton would be Edmonton CC. Back in the day, they had a ton of players from the Caribbean who could hit a very long ball, not so great for us out in the field but great to watch.

8. Who would make your all time Kenton XI?

  1. Schopun Jooma
  2. Deepak Singh
  3. Sachin Patel
  4. Owen O’Neil Khaled
  5. Mark Sweeney
  6. Kalpesh Kerai (capt.)
  7. Viraj Patel (wk.)
  8. Nandu Kerai
  9. Rahul Kotecha
  10. Shafiq Mohammed
  11. Sami Haider

Players in bold are currently representing our XI's on a Saturday.

9. What’s the best thing about Kenton CC?
The unity within the club and the players themselves – it’s my second family and that’s what I love about the club. We’ve had our ups and downs but somehow, we manage to maintain harmony and overcome tough situations to make cricket fun and enjoyable. I don’t hang around much after games, but I do love the banter over a few drinks with the boys. It’s always a good laugh watching players who did not perform try to justify the performances… especially when bowlers say they would have had 5 wickets if everyone caught their catches!

10. Where would you like to see Kenton in 3 years’ time?
This committee has been working extremely hard over the last few years, and with them at the wheel I have a strong feeling there are no limits for Kenton. I am really hoping we can see Division 2 cricket all over again in 3 years’ time (or sooner!)
