Earlier this week, we interviewed Mark Giffin, here's the interview in full.
1. How long have you been at Kenton?
I’ve been at Kenton since 1974 and have been fortunate enough to play in all elevens here.
2. How did you first get into cricket?
I loved watching the test matches and then I came to the club and played football with cubs down the bottom and met Mick Powell. I used to come and help him on the ground and started laying the tables for tea at the weekend. Then I started scoring and eventually playing. Choosing Kenton was a no brainer as I lived 3 minutes away!
3. What's your best on-field cricket memory at Kenton?
The best memory for me had to be scoring 145* against Brondesbury CC in a mid-week game.
4. What’s your best off-field moment at Kenton?
It’s got to be the Saturday night singing and games, especially the last night of the season against Barnet, who would always come back to Kenton for a sing song. There’s that and the fact that I proposed to my wife at the club - if I forgot to mention this, I might have landed myself in some trouble!
5. Who’s your favourite drinking partner in the bar?
Mehul Thakrar. Despite losing him to Wembley, Kenton is his local and he is always in on Friday night playing darts talking cricket, and generally chatting. He’s a comfortable lad to be around and I love that he is still helping the club out.
6. Which player would you recommend avoiding in the nets?
Paul Bagust. Back in the day, when we didn't wear helmets, he would bowl from around 20 yards at Harrow School’s indoor nets. Fast, short and nasty stuff.
7. Who’s the toughest opposition you’ve played against?
The toughest team would have to be Southall who we always struggled against and the toughest opponent would have to be Ken Cave from North London Poly as he always took a liking to our bowling and thrashed us to all parts of the ground.
8. Who would make your all time Kenton XI?
Players in bold are currently representing our XI's on a Saturday.
9. What’s the best thing about Kenton CC?
Kenton has always been my second home. A place to enjoy sport with my friends. A place to grow up and my second family.
10. Where would you like to see Kenton in 3 years’ time?
I'd love to see us in the top division competing with the best teams. But more importantly, I'd also like to see us get stronger and better as a club and continue as the big happy family we are getting back to.
