FROM THE ARCHIVE: 10 Questions with Rahul Kotecha

Viraj Patel12 Oct 2022 - 15:49

Before his passing, we sat down with Geez as he talked us through his memories at the club...

'Rahul was a great friend who I had the pleasure to play alongside for many years. He was a great player, club member and fiercely competitive... you will be sadly missed my dear friend.'
- Steve Slade on Rahul Kotecha

Here's an interview from back in March 2022, when we sat down with Rahul 'Geez' Kotecha who recently passed after a battle with cancer. We wanted to post this as we hope it will bring back some good memories and a smile or two.

1) How long were you at Kenton CC?
I started playing for the colts in 1984 and my first full season in Mens cricket was 1986. In total, I was a playing member at Kenton CC for 28 years.

2) How did you first get into cricket and what made you choose Kenton CC?
I went to watch the 1981 Ashes test at Headingly with a bunch of students from school. It was a great experience, and we got to see Botham and Dilley. I loved every minute of it and I supported England ever since. Cricket at school stopped in 1984, so if we wanted to play, we had to join a club. We were given a few choices of clubs by the school and round where I lived, a few of us decided to take the next bus - 1 bus went to Finchley and the other to Kenton - the 183 came first and I ended up at Kenton. A special mention to Alan Digby, as he was the reason I hung around at Kenton.

3) Best on-field cricket memory at Kenton?
Sachin Patel scoring a 50* on debut for the 1XI despite his age. The entire selection committee said he was too young, but my selection was justified!

4) What’s your best off field cricket moment with Kenton?
There’s simply too many, but they generally revolved around the bar. One of my funniest memories had to be when we were on tour. DJ (David John) flicked a butter sachet at Harry Sharma and followed up by chanting his name and doing a jig, it had everyone in hysterics!

5) Who was your favourite drinking partner in the bar?
There’s too many to name, but the most important was the barman/barlady, without them there’s no drinks!

6) Which players would you recommend avoiding in the nets?
Sachin Patel comes to mind as his action was very off putting, and David Sweeney, as he forced you to play shots that you didn’t want.

7) Who is toughest opponent you’ve played against?
David Walker (Harrow), the stats say it all.

8) What’s your all time Kenton XI?

1) Schopun Jooma
2) Mark Giffin
3) Sachin Patel
4) Mark Dyson (wkt)
5) Malcom Sharp
6) Ashish Karia
7) Joel Murphy
8) David Sweeney
9) Paul Mcivor
10) Sami Haider
11) Richard Hastie

I’ve probably missed a few, so apologies.

Players in bold are currently representing our XI's on a Saturday.

9) What’s the best thing about Kenton CC?
The family environment we have at the club and the social side, no club beat Kenton for post match socials - it’s still the same now!

10) Where would you like to see Kenton CC in 3 years time?
Playing good cricket in the top divisions of the county league.

A true gent, RIP Geez
